There are plenty of (other) fish in the sea.

字面上是「海裡還有很多魚」，用來表示還有其他人選。這個說法經常用於表示「天涯何處無芳草」，男/女朋友再找就有了。

A: I never should’ve broken up with Jacob.

我不該跟雅各分手的。

B: Don’t worry. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

別擔心啦。天涯何處無芳草。

let the cat out of the bag

古時候到市場買小豬，豬販會把小豬放在布袋裡讓客人帶回家，但是有不肖商人會拿體重接近的野貓放在袋子裡，等客人回家打開了袋子才知道自己被騙。因此 Don’t let the cat out of the bag.（別讓貓從袋子出來）就有了「別露出馬腳」、「洩漏祕密」的意思。

A: I thought it was supposed to be a surprise party.

我還以為這是一場驚喜派對。

B: It was, but somebody let the cat out of the bag.

原本是，但有個傢伙洩漏祕密了。

Something fishy is going on.

be going on 表示「某事正在進行」；fishy 是「可疑的」，當你覺得氣氛怪怪的，或是覺得有事瞞著，就可以用這句話提出疑問，表示「情況不太對勁喔」。

A: Why is everybody acting so strange?

為什麼大家都怪怪的？

B: Yeah. There’s something fishy going on here.

對啊。這裡不太對勁。

guilty as a cat in a fishbowl

fishbowl 是「玻璃魚缸」的意思，當有一隻貓卡在魚缸裡，可想而知魚的下場一定是進貓的肚子裡了。所以這裡的意思就是引申為「人贓俱獲」、「罪證確鑿」的意思。

A: Are you sure Ralph is cheating on his wife?

你確定雷夫對他太太不忠？

B: He’s guilty as a cat in a fishbowl. I saw him checking into a hotel with his nsecretary.

他根本就是罪證確鑿了。我看到他和他的祕書一起在飯店辦住宿登記。

Look what the cat dragged in！

養貓的人，常碰到貓把獵物拖回家的情況，被拖來的不外乎小鳥之類的小動物，而且就算沒死也只剩半條命。這句話可以純粹表示驚奇「大家看看是誰來了。」或是用來揶揄一個狼狽不堪的人突然出現。若要表示一個人看起來很狼狽，也可以說 sb. looks like sth. the cat dragged in（某人看起來就像被貓拖回來的東西）。

A: Hey, look what the cat dragged in！

嘿，看看是誰慘兮兮的來啦！

B: Ha-ha. Kevin looks like he has a hangover-and he’s an hour late!

哈哈。凱文看來還在宿醉─還遲到一小時了。

have bigger fish to fry

字面上意思為「有更大的魚要煎」，意指眼前的事情沒那麼要緊，「有更重要的事要辦」。類似的說法還有 have other fish to fry，表示「有其他事情要忙」。

A: Is the mayor going to tackle the lack of parking spaces？

市長會解決停車位不足的問題嗎？

B: It’s not a priority. He’s got bigger fish to fry.

這件事不急。他有更重要的事要處理。

a fish out of water

當你覺得自己像條離了水的魚，與周遭的人們或環境格格不入、手腳都不知道該怎麼擺的時候，就可以用 a fish out of water來描述「覺得彆扭、不自在」的感覺。

Ａ: I did well in high school, but college is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

我在高中時成績很好，可是念大學比我想像的困難許多。

B: I know what you mean. I feel like a fish out of water here.

我知道你的意思。我在這裡也覺得格格不入。

there’s more than one way to skin a cat

這句血腥的諺語是在勸人「做事要懂得變通」。句中的 cat 除了指「貓」，在美國南方還有一種解釋是指「鯰魚」catfish。另一種較為罕見的版本是 there are more ways of killing a dog than by hanging （除了吊死，殺狗的方法還多得是）。

A: I tried to call my girlfriend, but she won’t answer.

我試著打電話給我女朋友，可是她不接。

B: There’s more than one way to skin a cat-try texting her.
