spill the beans

bean 是紅豆、綠豆之類的豆子，裝豆子的袋子要是破了，豆子就會撒（spill）的到處都是，一發不可收拾，因此 spill the beans引申為「洩漏秘密」。

雀兒喜的生日派對原本不應該是驚喜派對嗎？

like two peas in a pod

一個豌豆莢裡的豌豆全都長一個樣，這句話就是在形容兩者極為相似「簡直像雙胞胎」，也可以用來表示兩者「極為親密，形影不離」。

胡蘿蔔和棍子可以用來驅策騾馬前進，引申為任何以「賞罰」誘發動機，改變行為的措施。

extend an olive branch

橄欖枝（olive branch）典出《聖經》挪亞方舟的故事，當鴿子銜來橄欖枝，就代表洪水退去，苦難結束，因此鴿子和橄欖枝都是和平的象徵。extend an olive branch直譯為遞出一根橄欖枝，即「釋出善意」，也寫做offer an olive branch。

A: The company said they’d be willing to drop their lawsuit against us.

那家公司說他們願意撤銷對我們的告訴。

B: Since they’re extending an olive branch, maybe we should drop our suit too.

既然他們釋出善意，或許我們也該撤銷告訴。

hot potato

有些事具有爭議性，處理起來很棘手，讓人避之唯恐不及，我們會用「燙手山芋」表示，英文的 hot potato 有異曲同工之妙。

B: He hasn’t talked about it. Abortion is a political hot potato.

tomato, tomahto

有一首歌爵士名曲 “Let’s Call the Whole Thing off ”（我們不要再吵了），副歌的歌詞是You like potato, I like potahto ; you like tomato, I like tomahto. 不管 potato 跟 tomato怎麼發音，都是一樣的東西。當你說這兩個字，就是叫人不要再設法區別，「只是枝微末節」、「根本沒差」。

A: The shirt isn’t green with white stripes, it’s white with green stripes.

這件上衣不是綠底白條紋，是白底綠條紋。

B: Tomato, tomahto…whatever.

根本沒差，隨便啦。

(as) cool as a cucumber

cucumber是小黃瓜，這個片語是在玩cool和cucumber押頭韻（兩個字首都是[k]發音）的文字遊戲，「跟小黃瓜一樣酷」是「臨危不亂」的意思。

A: Were you nervous during your job interview？

你去面試的時候會緊張嗎？

B: Nope. I was cool as a cucumber.

不會。我非常鎮定。
